Report on second meeting of the medical schools’ statewide collaboration on physician education in geriatrics, including a statement of mission, goals, summary of plans and a timetable to develop a statewide standard of core competencies and evaluation methods for dementia assessment and management and for other common geriatric problems. An outline of the program, list of attendees, and topics of discussion involving medical school education deans and geriatrics curriculum directors and other interested parties will be included in the report. Report on initial meetings with leadership from the Alzheimer’s Association, Florida Medical Association, Florida Nurses Association, Florida Medical Directors Association, Florida Directors of Nursing, and major industry organizations (Florida Association of Homes for the Aging and Florida Health Care Association) to gather resources (curricula and related materials) and ascertain major goals for dementia training in general and related training objectives for Geri U & CD-ROM teaching aids in particular. Report on convening with the Alzheimer’s Association a group of experts and stakeholders in dementia assessment and management to gather available training curricula and related education materials, identify TNH’s best sources of content and best approaches to formulating best practice standards for dementia, and to generate and promote related dementia training for direct care staff. Report on updated design and implementation plans for Geri U, including the downloading of content from the Geri-U server to personal data assistants (PDAs). Initial report on plans to develop a training and research project on pain assessment and management in dementia patients. |

Three (3) case-based modules for the chronic illness core curriculum and a report on their implementation. Report on the conduct of an innovative dementia continuing medical education (CME) program, developed in collaboration with Palm Beach County’s Omega project, Morse Geriatric Center, Nova Southeastern University, and the Palm Beach County Medical Society. Report on a methodology for the download of educational materials on dementia to PDAs (handheld computers) and the clinical usability and utility of these devices for bolstering dementia assessment and management. Pilot project proposal (PP2001-A) on the impact of education with Geri U and/or CD-ROMs on competencies of licensed practical nurses in evaluation and management of dementia patients. Report on usability and utility of the proposed dementia training approach, curriculum, content, and materials, including formal and informal assessments of major stakeholders: Alzheimer’s Association, FMA, MDA, FNA, FDON, FHCA, FAHA, et al. Report on a newly developed plan for multidisciplinary training and research involving the roles and effectiveness of physicians, nursing, and other disciplines in a newly established Program for All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) operation at TNH. Follow-up report on progress in the implementation of a longitudinal,l integrated 4-year geriatrics training curriculum for medical students, including clinical rotations on acute geriatric units and in nursing homes that emphasize comprehensive geriatric assessment and management approaches. Report on progress in developing a beta version of a home care CD-ROM and/or related Geri U computer-based self-instruction modules in home care for medical and nursing trainees. Report on progress in creating a geriatric primary care and formal evaluation and management training experience for medical residents in anambulatory care clinic serving an underprivileged population of frail elderly. Report on the revised and further developed program of dementia training and support materials to be distributed for field testing in long-term care organizations and institutions throughout Florida. Report on initiation and revision of the Geri U beta version based on usability and utility testing data for medical and nursing personnel.
