The Teaching Nursing Home program creates forums, initiatives, and core resources for identification and eventual resolution of complex long-term care issues. 
The program promotes research and training directed at best practices in long-term care and their adoption by communities and involved health-care providers.

Submit a written report on activities of TNH’s statewide medical school consortium involving: (1) the identification, development, and evaluation of care competencies for the major LTC/geriatric syndromes proposed as requirements for demonstration by graduating medical students; and (2) the provision of technical support for the development of FSU’s geriatrics and LTC curriculum for medical students.

Submit a written report on research regarding care coordination for frail persons, including the preparation of a manuscript on the comparison of care coordination and telecare intervention in frail persons with congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes.

Submit a written report on presentation of TNH education for nurses and physicians at annual meetings of the Florida Geriatrics Society and the Florida Association for Homes for the Aging.

Submit a written report on research pertaining to the introduction of LPNs and

RNs at the TNH to computer-assisted and Internet learning.

Submit a written report on creation of a GeriU forum on “Gold Seal Best Practices,” a compendium of best practices provided by Gold Seal designees/awardees.

Submit a written report on development of a plan as well as policies for the formal designation and operations of a TNH steering committee involving the TNH affiliates and other key stakeholders and on the committee’s development of strategies for continuing state funding and seeking alternative funding via spin-offs and value-added approaches to TNH activities.

Submit a written report on progress of the pre/post knowledge, skill, and attitude comparisons and evaluation of CD-ROM dementia training for LPNs and other LTC professionals.

Submit a written report on the revision and further development of the dementia training program for field-testing in LTC institutions throughout Florida, including DOEA’s assessment of the LPN dementia training module with specification of TNH responses and certification status.

Submit a written report on an updated design and implementation of the public-release version of GeriU, including class offerings and library content, and the transition to advanced interactive multimedia applications and improved digital library organization with Web and search engine links

Submit a written report on research involving the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and the influence of vitamin D on mobility in frail persons.

Submit a written report on research regarding pain assessment and management in persons with moderate to severe dementia.

Submit a written report on planning and development of a pilot module for evaluation and statewide benchmarking of medical student competencies in major syndromes of geriatrics and LTC.

Submit a written report on career development of geriatrician-educators required for a 4-year, integrated, longitudinal medical school curriculum in geriatrics and LTC.

Submit a written report on development, in partnership with FGS and FOCUS, slide presentations and a GeriU class on osteoporosis, including modules on screening, diagnosis, and management for training professionals involved in LTC. 

Submit a written report on development of GeriU functionality as an online community, with forums for communication and organization of information and resources for frail elderly and their caregivers, including a description of a “cyber café” for LTC residents and families that creates empowerment through access to the Internet for information and communication.

Submit a written report on research on the improvement of assessment and management of osteopenia and osteoporosis in LTC settings.

Submit a written report on research on barriers to depression recognition and management and on behavioral training to bolster the ability of frail persons to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression.

Submit a written report on best practices and standards of care for depression in dementia and the identification of core competencies for the recognition and management of depression in LTC settings, taking into consideration current controversies in managing depression, interdisciplinary approaches, and barriers to effective depression management, especially in dementia, and including plans for a computer-assisted training module (GeriU class) on care competencies for depression and quality-of-life assessment in patients with dementia.

Submit a written report on research regarding the promotion and evaluation of assistive devices (care and communication technologies) in institutional and residential LTC settings.

Submit a written report on identification and selection of an LTC software product tailored for enhanced nursing home operation, with usability and utility assessment, including the software’s impact on tracking MDS parameters, resource utilization, case-mix, management outcomes for geriatric syndromes, and specific disease condition, prevention, and risk management.

Submit a written report on content specifications and creation of a CD-ROM training module (GeriU production team) on pain assessment and management in dementia patients.

Submit a written report on plans for conferences and qualitative and quantitative research approaches to be employed for identifying “strengths and assets” for residents and workers in various LTC settings.

Submit a written report on the planning and implementation of models for LTC workforce development in cooperation with LTC facilities in Jacksonville, Naples, West Palm Beach, Pensacola, and Miami.

Submit a written report on the prevalence of, and management approaches to, osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency, including the use of vitamin D and protein and other nutritional supplements with reported musculoskeletal benefits in frail persons in LTC and the development of strategies for public education and professional awareness of these related common problems in institutional and residential settings.

Submit a written report on the convening of a statewide committee of experts and stakeholders in falls assessment and management and prevention to develop a plan for assessing and innovating the approach to mobility and falls risk management issues in residential and institutional settings, including the gathering of training curricula and other education materials, identification of the best sources of content and best approaches to formulating best- practice standards for falls and fracture prevention, and generation and promotion of falls prevention training for direct care staff.

Submit a written report on needs assessment, planning, and pilot data collection for extending TNH training and research activities into lower-cost institutional models, including assisted-living facilities.

Submit a written report on research of an online testing approach to assess usability and utility of computer-assisted training for core competencies and best practices in LTC.

Submit a written report on final evaluation of the pilot project for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2003, with a list of activities under consideration for the next fiscal year (2003-2004), including the activities of all affiliated project sites.

Submit a written report on updated dementia training CD-ROMs, including one for dementia training of CNAs and a revised and updated LPN CD-ROM training in dementia with a new module on pain management in dementia and a module on advanced training topics.

Submit list of names and educational history of each trainee participating in the Teaching Nursing Home pilot project during 2002-03.
