The Teaching Nursing Home program creates forums, initiatives, and core resources for identification and eventual resolution of complex long-term care issues. 
TNH program creates forums, initiatives, and core resources for identification and eventual resolution of complex LTC issues; the program promotes research and training directed at best practices in LTC and their adoption by communities and involved health-care providers.

Written report on TNH presentations at AHCA-sponsored and other agency and organizational meetings for training in LTC, notably the annual meetings of the Florida Geriatrics Society and the Florida Association for Homes for the Aging, on the TNH novel prescribed exercise and nutrition approach for mobility enhancement and falls prevention in LTC settings.

Written report on development of a plan for statewide training and research in best practices and quality improvement in LTC, with effort focused on leading problems as identified through statewide data collection, inspections, and TNH-agency-industry-academia conferences; initial plans for creating a TNH–agency–industry partnership for quality improvement based on training and tracking MDS usage and improving quality of care; this report will also explore how to incorporate nursing home risk management programs into this training and partnership.

Written report on validation of class (online and CD-ROM) for LPNs on assessment and management of dementia.

Written report on implementation of a class (online and CD-ROM) for CNA training in dementia for field-testing in LTC institutions throughout Florida.

Report on implementation and validation of LPN and other LTC staff training in pain assessment and management in dementia residents.

 

Written report on implementation and validation of LPN and other LTC staff training in cognitive assessment of LTC residents.

 

Written report on planning and development of a pilot module for evaluation and statewide benchmarking of learning objectives and assessment methodology for medical student competencies in dementia.

Report on the convening of an advisory board to critique proposed statewide guidelines related to “best practices” and core competencies for LTC staff dealing with falls and to gather resources (curricula and related materials) and ascertain major goals for falls reporting, evaluation, and management.

Report on specific objectives and assessment methods for falls competencies for health-care professionals-in-training, including the establishment of a specialty referral clinic for demonstrating the best practices in evaluation and management of falls, including post-fall counseling.

 


Written report on follow-up meetings to frame specific training objectives and assessment approaches for the development of computerized teaching aids for falls and falls-related injuries prevention and management.

Written report on convening with the Alzheimer’s Association a group of experts and stakeholders in assessment and management of depression in dementia, to gather available training curricula and related education materials and identify TNH’s best sources of content and best approaches to formulating best practice standards for depression in persons with dementia; generating and promoting related training for direct care staff.

Initial written report on plans to develop a curriculum and evaluation methodology for training LTC professionals in assessment and management of depression in dementia patients, including plans for a computer-assisted training module on care competencies for depression and quality-of-life assessment in patients with dementia.

 

Written report on the addition of computer-based self-instruction modules on depression in de(mentia)pression to existing online (GeriU) classes in dementia for LTC professionals.

Written Report on diabetes management in LTC: training and research related to diabetes evaluation and management in LTC settings, including work on best practices developed in partnership with pharmaceutical and LTC industries and the Florida and American Geriatrics Societies.

 

Written report on training physicians in LTC: statewide consortium of geriatrics and LTC education initiated by TNH for medical students and physicians in training, including an annual retreat of education deans and geriatrics curriculum directors and other interested parties from all of the medical schools in Florida.

Report on evaluation and management of frailty in the assisted living facility setting: needs assessment, planning, and pilot data collection for extending TNH training and research activities in dementia and falls into lower-cost institutional models, including assisted-living facilities.

Written report on meetings, policy formulation, and strategic planning by the TNH steering committee involving LTC concerns of the TNH affiliates, health professionals, and representatives of industry and other key stakeholders .

Written report on final evaluation of the TNH pilot project for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2004, with a list of activities under consideration for the next fiscal year (2004-2005), including the activities of all affiliated project sites.

 

Written list of names and educational history of each trainee participating in the Teaching Nursing Home pilot project during 2003-2004.
